Galit Kaunitz is the Assistant Professor of Oboe at The University of Southern Mississippi, joining the faculty in 2015. She is a devoted performer and pedagogue who gives recitals and master classes throughout the United States.
Galit loves the interactive and connecting power of chamber music. She performs regularly with Category 5 and Magnolia Reed Trio, USM’s faculty ensembles. The Magnolia Reed Trio recently performed a spring 2017 tour of Louisiana, culminating in recitals at Louisiana State University and Northwestern State University. As a member of the Driftless Winds Reed Trio, she was selected to perform at the 2016 International Double Reed Society Conference in Columbus, GA and College Music Society National Conference in Santa Fe, NM. Driftless Winds completed a week-long residency at the Avaloch Farm Music Institute in 2015, where they learned a program of new commissions for the ensemble by Brian Van Winkel, Chiayu Hsu, and Rachel Devorah Trapp. Galit is a founding member of the Coreopsis Quintet, based in Tallahassee, FL, which was selected to give a performance and master class tour of Costa Rica as part of Centro Cultural’s Promising Artists of the 21st Century Program in 2013.
A seasoned orchestral musician, Galit currently plays second oboe/English horn with the Meridian and Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestras, and regularly appears with the Louisiana Philharmonic and Mobile Symphony Orchestra. In the past, she has performed with the Charleston, Tallahassee, Austin, and Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestras, Naples Philharmonic, and Sinfonia Gulf Coast. In addition to playing within the orchestra, Galit had the honor of performing the Strauss Oboe Concerto with the USM Symphony Orchestra in November 2016.
Galit Kaunitz earned her D.M. from the Florida State University with a certificate in college teaching, M.M. from the University of Texas at Austin, and B.M. from the Hartt School of Music. Her major teachers include Eric Ohlsson, Rebecca Henderson, and Humbert Lucarelli. Galit lives in Hattiesburg, MS with her wife Beckie, and their very sassy cat.
